Penguins, Snowmen and a Freebie, Oh My!

Only the weekend left of my winter break. It went SO fast! I look forward to seeing the kiddos this month. It is always so impressive to see the change that takes place after break. Most of those first graders come back ready to go and more spongelike than ever. We really start demanding a lot more in regard to writing, and most are up to the challenge.

As promised, I randomly generated a winner of my newest pack.
Congrats Cindy! Check your email. :D

Thanks for all of the fabulous feedback about this guy!
You can find My Resolution for the New Year Penguin in either of my stores. I am so excited to add him to my January work. I'm really looking forward to doing this with the kiddos on Monday.

We cover a lot of things in January. One of the themes we are focusing on the Antartica and Arctic habitats (or lack thereof). In order to be sure I am able to squeeze in science and social studies I incorporate it into as much of my reading, writing and math as possible. I will be pulling out all of my other winter writing and word and math games....
Super Penguin to the Rescue! - Writing Lesson & Craft --- So fun! This includes a week long writing lesson. This kids love making this craft. The unit includes all of the templates you need to do all of the brainstorming and pre-writing. These little guys always turn out so cute.

The Winter Writing Activities pack includes several writing mini-lessons centered around snowmen. The kids enjoy the creative, narrative nature of the writing. It also includes a little snowmen craft.

For independent practice I'll be putting out my winter word work and math games. The Winter Word Games Pack include games and activities that offer the kids a chance to independently practice differentiating long and short vowels. The Fishing for Digraphs game has the kids reading and categorizing digraphs. I designed Polar Sight Word Shoot Out for my kids to practice the sight words we cover in January, but you can "program" the game board with any words you wish.
Click the unit cover to check it out.

The Winter Math Games Pack include games that allow the kids to practice two of the primary math skills we will be doing in my room: comparing numbers and skip counting. Even though skip counting isn't a first grade skill in common core, it sure does help them master number order. It also helps improve addition and subtraction. We work on 1 & 10 less and more all.year.long.  It is a VERY tough concept for some of them. The Long and Windy More & Less Path is a activity that I put out for them during independent practice time. As long as I call it a game... they're all for it!

Penguins, snowman, and polar bears fit in nicely with our science standards and they add tons of fun to all our math and ELA standards.

Here is our poem for the month.
Click it to grab a copy, poem presentation directions, a fill-in worksheet and practice pocket chart cards. I give my kiddos a copy of the poem and directions with their first homework for the month and then they present the poems in front of the class on the last Wednesday of the month. This one is particularly cute... most of them "waddle" as they say the last line. Adorable.

  5. Thank you for the great ideas! I am a new blogger and would love to get my name out there in the teacher blogging world. I am a K teacher right outside of Nashville (Franklin). I am having a difficult time tapping in and friending other teacher bloggers :) Any advice/shout outs would be tremendously appreciated!
    Thanks so much!
